Raced my good friend Mike in the 10K Bank to Bay run today. First time we raced each other. We are very equal and Mike is definately faster than me in a sprint. We were both sick the last couple of days (kids back in school), so I did not workout since Thursday when I did a couple of mile repeats at 6:00 pace.
My strategy was to run very hard for the first mile as I knew Mike would out-sprint me if it came to that. First mile 6:02, then tried to settle in around 6:20 but splits came in at 6:22, then 6:36 on the flat section - legs were already done!
At turn around I am really dying and get my first look at Mike - he is 10-15 seconds behind me and yells "lets go" - shoot, I figure it is all over.
Completely dying on the way back and a couple of uphill sections nearly break me. My HR is the highest I have even seen on a run (158-162 versus low 150s at my last 10K at Salmon days). Almost pass out at the finish line, time 40:30 versus 39:34 at Salmon Days. Mike comes in 20 seconds later.
The field was weaker than 2008, and my time got me 3rd in AG with a nice Nike bag and diploma - my first EVER anything at a running race :p
Highlight of the day for me was my 13 year old boy doing his first ever 5K, I think time was 26 something but time was not important to me at all, just nice to see him enjoy the experience.....
Second highlight was hanging with the only other RV-based runners: Both 76 years old and racing almost every weekend, now that is pretty darn cool.
Happy Racing, Hans
