The day didn't start out well, but it got better. Left North Bend and pouring rain at a bit late at 6:35 AM without my wallet, and drove through Snoqualmie much too fast, which attracted the attention of the local police. I got stopped for speeding, and said I was in a hurry to get to a race. Since I was almost the only car he had seen that morning (Snoqualmie is a very small town) he let me off with a warning, and no mention of the forgotten license.

I got to the TT site and the rain had stopped with cold but slowly clearing skies. My 808 front wheel had a slow leak of undetermined cause, despite new tire and trying 2 tubes, so I borrowed a friend's 404 that she had brought and raced on that. I warmed up for 35 minutes and my legs felt a bit fatigued from yesterday's workout. Rode an initially easy but building pace for about 20 minutes, then several 2 minute race pace / power output intervals, then spun easy back to the start with 10 minutes to go before my 8:04 start, starting in slot #6.

The course was from Carnation down to Fall City, then north east again, ending at the east end of Tolt Hill just short of the new bridge. After getting up to speed, I settled in to an average 275 watts and quickly reeled in the guy that started 30 seconds ahead of me. (EDIT: a closer examination of the power file showed I rode the first 5 minutes @ 285 watts, probably a bit too hard). The course has nothing resembling much of a hill, but did have an unexpected gentle upgrade for most of the last kilometer which was most unwelcome. I wound up not being able to hold my initial average power, slipping to a normalized 267 (avg 266). I had the course length at 12.69 miles, and my finish time was 33:04.

Awesome Chris and this helps validate the consensus that outdoor FT is somewhere in the region of 10W higher than indoor. More than a coincidence that after our discussion yesterday at EMC you hold a power output for 33 mins exactly 10W higher than your indoor FTP...I am good or what :D

Well done Chris, just ease off on the gas (in the car that is not on the bike)....

Great Chris - that is a pretty nice time I think from the times that were floating around out there, most seemed to feel the course was slower than last year - way to go!!!!!

I checked out leg 3 of the Mount SI relay, but gravity seemed a bit heavy today.

Cheers, Hans

Oops, sorry Chris I think I was wrong regarding your numbers. They are in fact very close (your indoor and outdoor FTP values), within 3 watts of each other.

So we could deduce that you did indeed go out too hard and as a result your avg watts are a little lower than they would have been had you ridden a more balanced race.

Food for thought.
